Your Stay

Rehabilitation and Why You May Need it
Following surgery, an accident or a major illness, you may notice some reduction in your usual ability to cope with everyday activities. This can often be a very difficult experience for you and your family.

Rehabilitation provides the care, therapy and support needed to assist you towards attaining maximum independence.

How is my Admission to Calvary Rehabilitation Hospital Funded?
The staff will have confirmed your eligibility for rehabilitation with your private health fund or insurance company prior to admission and advised you of the outcome. If you have any further questions in relation to funding you may request to speak with the office manager.

If you are Self Insured:
That is you have no private health coverage, you will be asked to pay the total estimated cost of your stay before or on the day of admission. Your accommodation fee is determined by the recommended room rate from the health funds. Any short fall in the estimate is payable on discharge or if unknown on discharge, an account will be posted to you, payable within seven days. The cost of any pharmacy items, medical aids and external allied health services will be billed to you directly by the provider of the product and/or service.

Patients with compensation claims may be required to pay an estimate of their total hospitalisation costs on admission. This requirement will be waived if the insurer confirms liability in writing with the hospital prior to admission. Please ensure that your claim number and the contact details of your claim manager are provided to the hospital prior to admission.

Accounts to Medicare
Medicare covers you for a percentage of your doctor’s fees and tests ordered. Your private health fund will reimburse all or part of the gap to you.

Other services that you are financially responsible for include:

  • Specialist medical officers
  • Radiology SA
  • Pathology, if any blood tests or biopsies etc. were required
  • Emergency centre if you were admitted via the emergency centre at Calvary Wakefield Hospital
  • Transport costs to outside facilities for tests/appointments.

Administration staff will visit you during your admission to ensure all relevant health funds/financial documentation relating to your admission is completed or you are welcome to visit the staff at the front desk to complete at a convenient time if your condition allows.

Pharmacy
The pharmacy (situated off site) will bill you directly for all discharge medications. You may be required to pay the bill first and claim the amount from your health fund. Discharge medications which are not related to your admission diagnosis are not covered by your health fund.

General Therapy Session Requirements
Each room has a timetable on the pin board. Your individual therapy sessions, tests and any other appointments will be written into the timetable. You can then be actively involved in ensuring you are ready at the appropriate time and are able to offer your relatives/friends the best times to visit - as your therapy/treatment must be your priority.

Home Visit
During your rehabilitation stay if required, an occupational therapist may take you to your home (or other discharge destination).  With your approval, family members are invited to be present during the home visit. The purpose of this visit is to assess your ability to manage in your home environment, make recommendations, and advise on any home modifications or additional services you may need.

Discharge Planning
Your progress towards your goals and discharge will be reviewed weekly at a team meeting. Your discharge date will be confirmed with you in consultation with the team.

Aids and Equipment
The hospital is able to supply some aids required for discharge at a cost, which can be arranged for you by your therapist or you may choose to source them from an external supplier. Any items supplied from the hospital will be invoiced to your account and finalised with you as you depart. Items you require that are not supplied by the hospital can be hired/purchased in consultation with you and organised by your therapists.

Discharge
Time of discharge is by 10.00am. If this time is difficult for you due to extenuating circumstances please speak to the nursing staff prior to your planned discharge date. If you have arranged a later discharge time you may be asked to sit out of your room. Staff will assist to facilitate discharge arrangements with you during your admission. If your condition tolerates, you are requested to finalise any accounts/paperwork at reception as you depart.

Care after discharge
Ongoing services or treatment appointments will be arranged in consultation with you prior to your discharge as required.

Discharge summary
A summary of your rehabilitation treatment and care will be sent to your general practitioner, referring doctor and any other services involved in your ongoing care. A copy of your ongoing treatment, appointments and medication will be given to you.

Accommodation
Calvary Rehabilitation Hospital offers a choice of private or twin share accommodation. Each room has an en suite bathroom specifically designed for wheelchairs and any necessary supportive equipment. Most rooms have a view of the hospital's gardens. Every effort is made to provide the type of room you requested, however this is not always possible. Bed allocations are subject to the availability at the time of your admission, clinical assessment and funding arrangements. As the preferred accommodation becomes available staff will arrange a transfer if you still prefer to move.  Patients funded for twin accommodation may wish to discuss out of pocket expenses required with any member of administration or nursing staff if they would prefer to be transferred to a single room. Should you proceed, written consent accepting financial responsibility is required by the hospital.

All of the hospital staff are committed to assisting you in rehabilitation. We appoint staff of the highest calibre to provide a program of care designed to meet the total needs of the individual.

Students
Calvary Rehabilitation Hospital supports students across all clinical disciplines including medical. We are committed to ensuring our rehabilitation has a sustainable workforce into the future both here and across South Australia. You have the right to ask that a student not be involved in your care. If this is the case please communicate this to your nurse/or any other clinician during your stay. All students regardless of discipline/year level are fully supervised by permanent members of Calvary Rehabilitation Hospital staff.
